Mannheim, Germany-based utility, MVV, has announced plans to deploy a heat pump which uses water from the Rhine as its heat source.

Heat pump supplier for the project, Siemens Energy, has announced it will be one of the largest heat pumps in Germany. The heat pump will have a thermal capacity of 20MW and electrical capacity of about 7MW.

The heat pump system will supply around 3,500 households with electrically sourced district heating with predicted CO2 emission savings of 10,000 tons per year from 2023.
